The Small Business Administration (SBA) will be 50 years old this year and Portland celebrates Small Business Week from June 17 to 21.  In the Small Business Act of July 30, 1953, Congress created the SBA, whose function was to “aid, counsel, assist and protect, insofar as is possible, the interests of small business concerns.” The charter also stipulated that SBA would ensure small businesses a “fair proportion” of government contracts and sales of surplus property.  Since its founding, the SBA has delivered millions of loans, loan guarantees, contracts, counseling sessions and other forms of assistance to small businesses. Go to sba.gov for information about their classes and services. As for Small Business Week, we hope you will continue to value the small businesses in our District and either drop in for the first time or revisit your favorite ones to meet your daily and special needs. Watch for the Small Business Week signs in the windows of many of Hawthorne’s restaurants, stores and service providers.

Here is one more reminder to mark your calendars and save Sunday, August 18th, 11 am to 7 pm for the 2013 Street Fair.  Invite your out of town friends, relatives and facebook friends to check out new venues and events planned by businesses and property owners.  This is a special summer day for the entire community to celebrate the Boulevard.  Main Stage music booked to date includes the New Iberians, Angel Bouchet Band, Ben Rice Band, and No Hero.

Sunday Parkways will cross Hawthorne on August 25th this year.  We welcome you all to have lunch on the Boulevard and check us out!
