Multnomah 4-H Youth Program Searches for Alumni

WHAT: Fall 2013 Call to Action:

This fall, Maureen Hosty and Aliesje King of the Multnomah County 4-H program are sending out a call to action to any local 4-H Alumni.

Multnomah County 4-H is gearing up for another year, and is searching for alumni to volunteer with the growing program. For several years 4-H was absent in Multnomah County and now, as they continue to re-create their program, they are looking for 4-H Alumni to join them in their Revolution of Responsibility. Currently there are over a dozen active 4-H clubs in Multnomah County, and several 4-H Member Schools. These clubs and schools are a part of a growing network of 4-H Programs that teach youth (and adults) about many subjects and this fall we are focusing on  Fabric & Fiber Arts: Sewing, Knitting and Crochet; Farms and Gardens: Planting, Growing & Harvesting; Foodies 101: Cooking, Preserving, and Baking; Fur, and Feathers: Small Animal Husbandry; and Nature Clubs: Backyards and Beyond.

In addition to these, there are endless possibilities for involving 4-H in our community, and the program needs alumni to make this happen. This is the call for action for alumni to return to 4-H to become (or mentor) new 4-H leaders, trainers, and to help with special events, to offer skills or experiences to fostering Multnomah Counties evolving program. And with a variety of options, you can decide on the level of involvement that fits your skills and schedule:

  • Lead youth within school-based, after-school and camp settings, or through a community club

  • Serve as a chaperone, board member, judge or camp counselor

  • Develop and support service opportunities for youth in your own community

  • Teach using curriculum developed by your state university

  • Work with other adults to create fun and exciting programs

If every young person could step into 4-H, imagine all the resourceful problem solvers, skilled workers and capable leaders they’d become. That future is in our reach if we all lend our time and talents to guide the young people who will create it.
