Buckman

After an August hiatus, Buckman Community Association resumes regular monthly meetings.  September 12, 7-9 pm at Multnomah County Board Room, 501 SE Hawthorne (Board meets 6-7 pm). All are welcome and refreshments will be served. BCA will hear from the owner of four properties located at 15th and SE Belmont St. about the owner’s desire to pursue a comprehensive Plan Zoning change from R-1 (Residential 1 per 1000 sq/ft.) to Commercial. The four houses in the tax lot are all listed on the National Historic Register, and the potential impacts by this change to these structures as well as the nearby area will be discussed. At this same meeting, we will also recap the highly successful 4th Annual Buckman Party in the Park, and do base planning for next year.

Thursday, September 19, 7-9 pm, the BCA Land Use Meeting (also held at 501 SE Hawthorne) will host developer Aaron Jones who’s in the beginning development stages for the parking lot on SE 12th bounded by Taylor and Salmon Streets (1100 SE 12th).  Plans call for a large multi-storied apartment building with limited parking. Neighbors and interested community members are invited to attend to talk with Aaron and his team about the project, construction impacts and timelines.

Our Newsletter editor and Board member, Rhys Van Bemmel is moving out of state and we need a new editor for the Buckman Voice. We publish 4-5 times per calendar year and the layout/editing load is light. We’ll help get you set up! Email the BCA to express your interest.

BCA Board Member Jim Forristal is planning to change the plantings in several Buckman traffic circles to create pollinator-friendly flowers and plants. Street painting may be included! To find out about these plans and get involved in the fun, contact Jim at nwclassic@gmail.com.

This past month, the Portland neighborhood community lost longtime journalist Lee Perlman. Lee was a regular BCA meeting participant and we considered him a dear friend. We send our condolences to his mother and family. A gathering in Lee’s honor will be held at Emanuel Hospital’s auditorium on Sunday, September 15 at 4 pm.
