Treasurer Bing Wong reported we have approximately $700 remaining for 2013 and $1,300 for 2014 available in our outreach budget. Discussion ensued around ways to use those funds. They can be used for any purpose that will bring awareness to our neighborhood association. Kelly Fedderson of SE Uplift mentioned some ways we can spend the money on issues such as advertising, social events, booths at neighborhood fairs, etc. Stephanie Stewart suggested we continue the discussion at another meeting.
Katherine Anderson, SE Crime Prevention Coordinator for the office of Neighborhood Involvement, spoke about the hundreds of tire slashings since the beginning of May. They have been mostly occurring east of the river to approximately 72nd Ave. in SE and NE Portland. The instrument used is similar to an awl or an ice-pick and usually the damage is through the sidewall of the tire on the streetside. The attacks generally occur in the late night/early morning hours from approximately 10 pm – 6 am.
There have been approximately 350 reported incidents on the east side, but the actual number is higher since many of the attacks are not reported. The Les Schwab stores in the area report a drastic increase in the number of vehicles with this type of damage. More than half the vehicles attacked have been SUVs and pickups. To deter this type of crime, keep exterior lights on and keep an eye out for unusual activity. If this happens to you, be sure to report the crime.
Jim Pierce suggested we seek an opportunity for community members to discuss reservoir issues directly with those involved in the process. Stephanie Stewart, Peter Niland, Jim Pierce and a member of State Rep. Alissa Keny-Guyer’s staff will contact interested parties and begin to coordinate a possible future group discussion. The City’s plan to close the three iconic reservoirs in Mt. Tabor Park has been among the most contentious issues in the neighborhood.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, October 16, at 7 pm at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church at SE 54th and Belmont, with a social time starting at 6:50 pm.
