As we move into the holidays, we look forward to the opportunity to celebrate the season with the Hawthorne District businesses. There will be lots of holiday lights, window decorations, great gift choices for the people you like to honor with something special in addition, as usual, to good food and good vibes. The District’s Hawthorne Holiday Stroll event on Saturday, December 7 will give you the opportunity to visit several stores with special offerings noted in the Hawthorne Gift Guide as well as visit with Santa’s helpers at Fred Meyer or Ben & Jerry’s.
To not only shop locally but to give locally, Bazi’s, Memento and other stores to be announced later in November will have a place set aside for you to bring an unwrapped, new toy for the KGW Toy Drive. We are pleased that this year they are focusing on gifts for the children served by and through the new Raphael House in SE Portland. Watch for details regarding Hawthorne Holiday Stroll plans in December’s SE Examiner. The Gift Guide will be available at Fred Meyer, New Seasons and other locations after Thanksgiving.

For the history buffs: because of Dr. Hawthorne operating the first hospital for those with mental issues, the name of the Boulevard, prior to Hawthorne, was Asylum Avenue. With the plans and current fund-raising project for a Memorial Garden at Lone Fir Cemetery between SE Morrison and Stark and SE 20th to 28th where Dr. Hawthorne, his wife, many of his patients and a large group of Chinese people are buried, this is a perfect tribute and reminder of the Boulevard’s historical roots.
Paramount Bedding, doing business as Parklane Mattresses, will be bouncing into 3535 and 3541 SE Hawthorne, the former Noah’s Bagels’ location soon. They will carry memory foam, latex and “green beds”. Watch for their arrival, especially if you’ve been waking up in the morning with an aching back.
