Portland International Film Fest looks the world in the eye

Like the blossoming cherry trees, February brings the annual Portland International Film Festival. This year is its 37th and there will be screenings in six locations in many parts of town (including more than 30 here in SE at Cinemagic, 2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd. and at OMSI’s Empirical Theatre). There are more than 125 films, 7 animated, many family-friendly, the After Dark midnight movie program, documentaries, shorts, visiting artists and the submissions for Best Foreign Language Film from both returning masters and emerging talents.

Pictured here is a still from Antboy, a new movie from Denmark, and an adventure spoof based on the popular Danish children’s books by Kenneth Bøgh Andersen. Pelle, a shy 12-year-old, develops unimaginable superpowers after being bitten by a genetically-modified ant. One of the family-friendly pics this year, Antboy shows Saturday, February 15 at 1 pm at Cinemagic along with three other films: Juvenile Offender (South Korea) at 3:30 pm; In Bloom (Georgia) at 6 pm and La Ultima Pelicula (Mexico) at 9 pm.

The schedule is vast and huge. Download the festival program at www.newsroom.nwfilm.org and make your movie plans ahead of time.

Ticket prices and festival passes are available at nwfilm.org.
