Roy Zimmerman, sings very original rabble-rousing songs about class warfare, creationism, same-sex marriage, guns, marijuana, abstinence, ignorance, war and greed. No matter how that sounds, he’s also wry, outrageous, amply entertaining and just plain funny. Lucky for us, Zimmerman appears in a rare concert Friday February 21 for the Portland FolkSong Society. It begins at 7:30 pm at St. David of Wales Episcopal Church, 2800 SE Harrison St.
With twelve albums and over twenty years onstage, Zimmerman’s welcome and ruthless satire brings energy to the struggle for peace and social justice. A founding member of the folk parody masters The Foremen and songs like “Hello NSA”,”Singalong Second Amendment” and “Buddy Can You Spare a Trillion Dollars”, Zimmerman’s songs are unforgettable, catchy, heard on Huffington Post, Youtube, HBO and Showtime.
Portland trio Rite of Spring, celebrates 40 years together and opens the show. Multi-instrumentalists Terry Prohaska, and Michael and Lynn Attwood are a fine beginning to an inspired musical evening.
Tickets are $17 general admission, $14 for PFS members and $8 for young folks ages 12-18 and available at www.portlandfolkmusic.org or at the door. Under age 12 are free. If the parking lot is full, there’s additional parking at SE 30th and Harrison St. thanks to the Mormon Church.
