Montavilla April 14

By Joanna Beatty

Major League Soccer coming to Montavilla Park? Representatives from Portland Parks and Recreation attended the March MNA meeting to discuss the possibility. In preparation for the MLS All Star Game being held in Portland this year, the Portland Timbers have proposed donating considerable funds to repurpose the Montavilla Park tennis courts for a futsal field, including recycled year-round turf, maintenance and events and community service in the park. This is in exchange for naming rights.

The proposed field name would be Portland Timbers Field at Montavilla Park. In a grossly underfunded park system, this would bring much needed to funds to our park; but is granting naming rights a slippery slope? Montavilla residents seem mostly in favor, but have expressed some concerns too. What do you think?

Spring is an excellent time to consider volunteering with your neighborhood association. We are excited to announce an upcoming Community Planning Meeting: Plug In-to Montavilla. We’ll be announcing results from our recent community survey and brainstorming both short and long-term projects that can have big impacts in our community. We need your ideas, skills and knowledge in turning great ideas into tangible projects and working committees. Join us Monday, April 28 from 6-8 pm at Multnomah University in Bradley Hall Room B3. This is a great opportunity to meet neighbors and find a place to plug-in to Montavilla that fits your schedule and interests.

Visit www.montavillapdx.org to learn about the latest news and events in our neighborhood.  We invite you to join us each second Monday at 7:30 pm at Montavilla United Methodist Church, 232 SE 80th Ave.  Parking and childcare are free and plentiful. Our next meeting is April 14.
