David Torn’s ‘splattercell’ Soundscapes

Guitar whiz David Torn appears in concert on May 16, at Holocene. 1001 SE Morrison St. It’s his first Portland performance since 1986 when he last appeared with saxophonist Jan Garbarek. He is touring this spring in support of a new album, Only Sky.

A master of sound manipulation, an ever-intrepid guitarist, producer, improviser, film composer and soundscape artist, Torn is alternately known as ‘splattercell’. His new record is solo insofar as he plays everything but he plumbs the edges of sound and it’s a swirl of orchestral atmospheres.

Torn was educated by Leonard Bernstein and has contributed to recordings by David Bowie, K.D. Lang, Madonna, Jeff Beck, Don Cherry, Meshell Ndegeocello and many others. The concert begins at 7 pm and tickets are $15 advance. $17 day of show. www.holocene.org
