I truly enjoy watching a street fair unfold itself from the streets. Having been involved with the planning and production of the Hawthorne Street Fair for 23 years, every year it is exciting to watch as it pulls itself  together. Starting with an empty street and evolving to music, relaxing places, street entertainers, day-long Children’s activities at SE 35th sponsored by Kids at Heart, it is a fun process to be part of as it opens to the public.

The Boulevard will again be closed to traffic from Cesar Chavez to SE 30th Avenue.  Bicycle parking is at each end and at several bike corrals along the way!  “Hawthorne Squares” are sponsored by Hawthorne Fred Meyer, Kids at Heart, Safeway, and Hawthorne Cutlery. These oases of grass at some of the intersections will be pleasant places to stop and take it all in.

The Rivermark Main Stage offerings will be phenomenal all day. See this month’s SE Examiner center insert for details.  Our own Teddy Roosevelt character actor, Gregg Harris, will be MCing and will offer a short performance during one of the band set-up breaks.

An outstanding line up of food and product vendors, community service providers and many of the businesses with storefronts on Hawthorne will be out on the Boulevard, too!

We enjoy slowing things down so our neighbors and friends can check out new brick and mortar businesses as well as food carts, visiting vendors and street event food items.

There will be music at the Hophouse and specials at New Seasons, near SE 41st, and a party celebrating lower Hawthorne sponsored by Really Good Stuff and HBBA at SE Maple, near SE 14th.

See you Sunday, August 16 between 11am and 7pm.

Thank you to article sponsors, Hawthorne Vision Center and The SE Examiner and to 2015 HBBA Benefactors to date: Hawthorne’s New Seasons Market,  Burgerville and Fred Meyer.
