Milagro Theatre, 525 SE Stark St. continues its long tradition of Día de los Muertos celebrations, with an original production: LA MUERTE BAILA.

aMilagro-1The play blends traditional dance, song and music of the Mexican Day of the Dead festivities, with a tale conceived and directed by Rebecca Martínez in collaboration with her ensemble.

In the bilingual story, the lens is on the other side of the grave and takes place on the eve of Día de los Muertos in a small Veracruz town. The villagers lay out trails of marigold petals to guide departed loved ones back to the world of the living, if only for a moment of sharing and remembrance. This year, the aroma of the Cempazuchitl flowers does not entice one muertito to make his yearly return to his loved ones.

The show runs from October 15 – November 8 and Day of the Dead altars by Pepe Moscoso and paintings by Verónica Gúzman are on display opening an hour before each show. Thursday, Oct 15, is preview night at 7:30 pm and opening night is Friday Oct 16, 7:30 pm with a post-show reception catered by La Bonita restaurant.
