ĄRCO at Holocene, New Classical

ĄRCO, the Amplified Repertory Chamber Orchestra presents ĄRCO Does the B’s featuring music by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and living composers as well. It all takes place at Holocene, 1001 SE Morrison St. Friday, January 22 at 7 pm and it’s even an all ages show.

ARCO-Does-the-B's-calendarThis time around they honor the German masters. Following an opening set by guest percussionist and drummer Kaleb Davies, they’ll present the Bach Violin Concerto in A minor; May This Bliss Never End for cello and piano, by Jacob ter Veldhuis; and an energetic 1st and 4th movements of Beethoven String Quartet Op. 18, No. 4 to complete the first set. The second program begins with a unique ĄRCO rendition of Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 5; Failing: A Very Difficult Piece for Solo Bass by Tom Johnson and then the ensemble performs all three movements of the Bach Double followed by the Resistance from Quartet No. 1 in A minor by ĄRCO’s Mike Hsu.

This isn’t exactly the classical music you’ve heard your whole life. Well, it is…in a way… Each piece is performed as written (no watered-down arrangements here) but it’s done with a 21st century altitude, amplified and sometimes blisteringly fast, and always played masterfully by lifelong classical musicians who continue to startle and amaze. Mike Hsu, Bryce Caster, Dan Shen, Andrew Sumitani, Hannah Hillebrand, Chang Lee and Mitchell Falconer bring it with them and this evening will warm the winter damp from the bones.

Add a lighting show from the future and state-of-the-art, sound-responsive visual effects presented by Lymay Iwasaki and it all adds up to an unforgettable music experience. arcopdx.com
