The 2016 Portland-grown Fertile Ground City-Wide Festival of New Works is in its eighth year and has become a highlight of the dark and wet chilly winter season. This year, it is eleven days long and presents more than 65 different theatrical presentations by nearly 50 producers. Playwrights, actors, dancers, designers alongside music, plays, acrobatics and too many disciplines in living color, up close and in 3D.
There will be new producers, returning companies, and dozens upon dozens of new works from Portland’s endless supply of creatives presented from Thursday, January 21 to Sunday, January 31 at venues all over town including many here in SE (SE venues include Hipbone Studio, Reed College, Milagro Theatre Clinton Street Theatre, Echo Theatre and the new Thorny Way to Heaven Theatre on SE 2nd St.).
New works span theatre, dance, comedy, circus arts, animation, and physical clowning through the arts with theatre, along with dance world premieres, workshops, staged readings, and a vast array of events offered at all times of the day.
Nicole Lane, Fertile Ground Festival Director puts it this way: “Fertile Ground is an incubator for new works of art creation citywide, I’m continually surprised at the abundance and diversity of new ‘acts of creation’ by Portland artists, many of whom are producing their own work and taking a giant leap to share it with Fertile Ground audiences.”
All access Festival Passes are $50 and are available online. Single tickets for all festival events are purchased directly through the producing companies. Links are fertilegroundpdx.org/2016-works.
A printed Festival Guide is available in many theatre lobbies around town including Artists Repertory Theatre, Portland Center Stage and Portland’5 Centers for the Performing Arts, among others, or online.
