An rare and anticipated evening, the Takoma Records Guitar Masters on their “Spirit of John Fahey” tour comes to Artichoke Music, 3130 Hawthrone Blvd. Saturday. March 12 in an 8 pm show.
The stellar line-up features three adept fingerstyle guitar masters: Peter Lang, Rick Ruskin and Toulouse Engelhardt, original members of the legendary Takoma 7 (along with Leo Kottke and Robbie Basho), and handpicked by John Fahey for his Takoma Record label from 1969 to 1976. They’re still working. and have all recorded other classic albums over the years.
Lang said “ I have many fond memories of those early years, and look forward to creating some of that ambiance with these two other masters of fingerstyle guitar.”
One of the world’s preeminent 6 and 12 string finger-picking guitar players, Lang cites Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake, Rev. Gary Davis, and Mississippi John Hurt as principal finger-picking influences saying: ‘Historians say blues was full blown by 1890 with centuries of African-American oral history behind it. The whole world loves it and the lyrics seem ageless — sex and power, betrayal and redemption. It was the southern working man’s pop music, what made Elvis, Dylan and Springsteen possible, also Tupac and Nirvana, for that matter…”
He has recorded or performed with Ry Cooder, Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, John Hartford, Emmylou Harris, Leo Kottke, Freddie King, Paul Butterfield, Keith Jarrett, Phoebe Snow, Maria Muldaur, The Yellowjackets, Robben Ford, and the list goes on.
