South Tabor July 2016

By Sandra Hay Magdaleno

The Street Mural, “The Crows Heart”, at the intersection of SE 67th and SE Woodward was just painted.  There were over 50 volunteers from ages four to teenage to seniors. Many businesses helped support the project with donations and discounts too. They included:  Powell Paint Center, Trader Joe’s, Best Baguettes, Rudy’s Pizza, Voodoo Donuts and Starbucks. It was a great community building event that livened up the neighborhood and brought people together for a fun artistic goal. Bike, walk or drive by. You’ll be pleased.  Thank you to Brenda, Melissa and Morgan for the hours of dedication putting the mural project together along with the many volunteers and business support. A barricade from SE 68th and Division St. and 4 of the 12 flashing lights were borrowed and not returned. Email President@southtabor.org or drop them off at Trinity Fellowship.

South Tabor Neighborhood Association approved the provisional adoption of the Division Design Guidelines and asked that the coverage area be extended to SE 81st. The Division Design Imitative has worked tirelessly for the last 2 years to put together guidelines for construction projects along Division to address issues such as displacement, compatibility, affordability, sustainability and more. Go to: divisiondesigninitiative.org for more information. Email your comments, concerns, suggestions and questions to:  ilovedivision@gmail.com.

STNA Land Use Committee asks for community input as to any key sites along Divison from SE 60th to SE 81st that might warrant special inclusion due to their historic nature, value to the community, excellent views, etc. Email: LandUse@southtabor.org or call Sandy at 503.756.8675 for specific ideas from 60th to SE 81st. Send direct to: ilovedivision@gmail.com.

The next Land Use/Visioning/Sustainability Committee meeting will be held Tuesday, July 19 from 7-8:30 pm at Trinity Fellowship at 2700 SE 67th with entrance from the parking in back. We will prepare a request for an additional donation to the Division Design Initiative for a professional revision in more “city code” language to go to City Council for inclusion in City Code as well as be working on a version of a Community Notification and Input Policy for STNA. We’ll be addressing possible recommendations for the Dennis 7 Dees residential project. On the Sustainability/Visioning side we will be working towards implementing block captain districts within the neighborhood. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Our annual Harvest Festival will be held Sunday, September 18, from noon to 4 pm. More to come on entertainment and venue.

STNA approved the proposed Rose Community Development preliminary plans for the redevelopment of the Furniture Store Property at 2517 SE 82nd, now being used by JAMS. They have been very responsive to community input. We feel this development will serve the neighborhood well.

National Night Out is the first Tuesday in August. This year it is August 2. Neighbors are encouraged to get together for fun and support. To start planning your block party, go online to: portlandoregon.gov/oni/article/33907.

PBOT did a Traffic Impact Study at 71st and Woodward.  They concluded that the number of accidents (6 in the last 4 years) was not abnormal. The visuals were good and no action was necessary.

Mt Tabor Summit Restroom is being restored. There was a bond last year that would Rehab the bathroom and put in the entrance to Mt Tabor Park at SE 64th and Division. We will do some research regarding the entrance.

Our next STNA board meeting is Thursday, July 21 at 7 pm at Trinity Fellowship, 2700 SE 67th, with entrance from the parking in the rear.
