Milagro Theatre‘s 21st Annual Day of the Dead celebration begins with the world premiere of El Muerto Vagabundo, a story inspired by the obituary of a homeless “muertos” without friends and family.
On the Day of the Dead in The City of Bridges The Kid, a near homeless orphan makes an ofrenda (offering placed on an altar) to summon his parents.
He encounters a vagabundo; a tramp who mistakenly takes the offering for himself. As The Kid chases after him, he ends up under a bridge, in a place called The Underworld where the forgotten, the lost and the dispossessed lay down for a night’s rest.
Building an altar and lighting a candle to honor their dead, The Kid learns the stories of those who live under the bridges.
The play runs October 14 to November 6. The story was conceived and directed by Georgina Escobar, Artist-in-Residence at Milagro this season. Opening night reception is catered by Tortillería Y Tienda De Leon’s beginning at 7:30 pm.
