Attention fans of resonator guitar, ukulele, blues oldtime and fiddletunes! Guitar goddess Del Rey and blues fiddler Suzy Thompson are coming to Portland Friday February 17 to explore the upbeat, positive side of the blues in a wise, womanly, witty show presented by Portland FolkMusic Society .
The duo has performed together since the mid-1980s, and they stir it up with energy, impeccable playing, powerful vocals and humor.
Thompson has been a vital member of the Bay Area acoustic music landscape for 30 years, and her fiddle and vocals have been featured with Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur and Mary Flower.
Del Rey’s resonator guitar and ukulele are virtuosic and covers country blues, stride piano, classic jazz, and hillbilly boogie. Together, their repertoire includes vintage numbers from blues icons like Memphis Minnie and the Mississippi Sheiks, flapper-era instrumentals from Kentucky to Trinidad and spicy originals too.
The concert takes place at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, 2828 SE Stephens St. Doors open at 7 pm and the concert begins at 7:30. Tickets are available online portlandfolkmsic.org.php, or at the door. Advance ticket are $18, $15 members, $9 youth, free under 12.
