Clinton Street’s ACLU benefit screens 1984 and more

April 3 – George Orwell’s 1984, (7pm) part of a nationally-coordinated screening. Movie theatres across the country in more than 80 cities and 34 states will participate collectively. This version stars the recently-departed John Hurt and Richard Burton’s final screen performance..

Orwell’s novel begins with the sentence, “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” The event’s date was chosen because it’s the day the story’s protagonist, Winston Smith begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary.  He even dares to fall in love… Orwell’s portrait of a government that manufactures their own facts, demands total obedience, and demonizes foreign enemies has never been timelier.

The 1984 version of 1984 stars the recently-departed John Hurt and was Richard Burton’s last film

Theaters are taking a stand for the simple truth that there are no such things as ‘alternative facts’. All proceeds collected will be donated to the ACLU. See aclu.org.
