Montavilla Neighborhood Notes January 2013

By Fritz Hirsch

Board members of Montavilla Neighborhood Association (MNA) shared a variety of information about what MNA had accomplished in 2012 and plans for 2013. Lew Scholl, Land Use and Transportation Committee Chair, reported on MNA’s efforts to move forward the conversation about transfer of ownership of 82nd Ave. from State of Oregon to City of Portland. Such a transfer would improve walkability and bikeability, economic development and livability for those who live and work along 82nd. Lew also reported about help MNA provided to neighbors to ensure dormitory development for Multnomah University students in the neighborhood didn’t negatively impact the neighborhood.

Roger Warren, Parks Committee Chair, reported on the tremendous success of the Concert in the Park at Berrydale Park. This outstanding event brought a concert to Berrydale for the first time. MNA is planning to put on another such concert at Berrydale in summer 2013.  Roger also reported that Berrydale Community Garden has plots available.  For more information, contact Portland Parks & Recreation Community Gardens Program online at portlandonline.com/parks/communitygardens.

Finally, Roger received a 2012 Sprout Award from SE Uplift for his work on concerts in the park. The annual award program celebrates outstanding volunteers and committees whose efforts help build vibrant and vital neighborhoods within the SE Uplift coalition.

Fritz Hirsch, MNA Chair, reported on events and initiatives planned for 2013, which include a neighborhood recycling event, support for the Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative economic development project focused on SE 82nd and Division, varied efforts still in planning to improve 82nd Ave., and neighborhood cleanup efforts.

Mr. Hirsch reported that MNA recently sponsored a scholarship for the Montavilla Community Center preschool, as well as Feast for Southeast, a community Thanksgiving meal held at Mt. Scott Community Center.  To do this work, MNA raises funds; if you would like to help, contact fritz.hirsch@gmail.com.

Visit the MNA online at www.montavillapdx.com, for information on volunteer opportunities, contact information for local resources and options for connecting. Attend a monthly association meeting, held every second Monday at 7:30 pm at Montavilla United Methodist Church, 232 S.E. 80th Ave.  On-site parking and childcare services are free and plentiful.
