Mt. Tabor Neighborhood Notes January 2013

By Kate Mitchell

At our final meeting of the year, we discussed possible safety improvements on Division St. between SE 52nd Ave. and SE 80th  Ave. Division is one of the most dangerous streets in the city. There have been two community meetings to consider problems and possible solutions. The goal is to increase pedestrian, auto, bus and bicycle safety.  One proposal is to change from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction with a turn lane and bike lanes.

The city’s Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has an opportunity to apply for a grant from the federal government to help pay for traffic improvements on Division. There is strong community support for PBOT to apply for the grant. If they get it, community members would have the opportunity to be involved in any design decisions. Participants at the MTNA meeting also supported PBOT’s application for the grant.

Dave Hillman gave an update on the Mt. Tabor Park Visitors Center which marked its first anniversary in October. There have been 5,456 visitors from 48 states and all over the world. The visitors center has information about the history of the park, maps, t-shirts and postcards for sale and a lost and found. Anyone who would like to volunteer in the center can contact the Friends of Mt.Tabor Park at taborfriends.org.

Portland Police Officer Gary Manougian stressed the importance of reporting all crimes, including break-ins. Burglary detectives use similarities to connect repeat offenders and can use small clues from different break-ins to catch the burglar. Things such as jewelry that may be sold to pawn shops can be tracked as well. Reports can be filed and updated at www.portlandoregon.gov/police.

The next MTNA meeting  will be Wednesday, January 16, at 7 pm at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church, located at SE 54th and Belmont.
