A new musical radio play written by Dennis Nyback, Ten Cents A Dance, will be performed live onstage Thursday, April 11 at the Clinton Street Theater and simulcast by remote on KBOO Radio 90.7FM. The performance begins at 7 pm.
Leading the cast will be singer Rebecca Kilgore. Leading the orchestra will be pianist Dave Frishberg.
The story is set in the autumn of 1941 and concerns a young man who dodges the draft by impersonating a woman and gets a job in a New York City Dance Hall as a hostess. Song and dance, murder and mayhem, wisecracking and wit, and of course, love, follow. Songs from the era including Ten Cents A Dance, I’ve Got a Crush on You, You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me and others.
Nyback previously created the stage review “Can’t We Be Friends” in Seattle that became the basis for the PBS American Masters production “Yours for a Song: The Women of Tin Pan Alley”. He currently is a critic for Portland Stage Reviews and a film collector who hosts a regular series.
The production is a benefit for KBOO Radio.
