Many Hands Make Great Street Fairs

By Karen Hery

It’s festival and street fair season with a party every weekend. It’s great if you are looking for things to do and challenging if you are just trying to get across town in normal traffic patterns.

For most of us, participation in these events consists of strolling through to enjoy the festivities.  There’s a whole world behind the joy of the day that people like long time community event coordinator Nancy Chapin know very well.

Chapin was there when the Hawthorne business district held their first street fair in ‘92 and worked with Reach Community Development as the Belmont Street Fair came into being in ‘96.  She’s on the front line this year putting the finishing touches on the 100th Birthday of the Broadway Bridge block party noon-7, Saturday, August 10.

Nancy Chapin will be happy to hear from you for the Broadway Bridge bash and the Hawthorne Street Fair: nchapin@tsgpdx.com

Many hands do make a great community event.  There are months of planning, the booking of bands and plenty of things that need doing right before and the day of to make it all come together as smoothly as possible.

Looking to set up a booth for selling your arts and crafts or to promote a new business?  There is still time to get in a booth request in for the Belmont Street Fair which takes place Saturday, September 12, noon – 7  pm. Application deadline is August 16 before booth rates go up.

There may even be time to slip in a last minute booth request for Hawthorne Street Fair on Sunday, August 18, 11 am -7 pm.

As for bands looking for places to play: the staff at TSG Services, where many of these events are coordinated, get over 200 inquiries a month from everything from African drummers to Irish folk singers to punk rock bands. Portland is a musical town and band slots at the various stages have been booked up for months.

Some of the real unsung heroes of these events are the community volunteers that close down the streets and open them back up, help vendors navigate the set up maze of trucks and carts and boxes, and pick up the trash, so businesses and neighbors are willing to do it all again next year.

Annette Schaff-Palmer, a volunteer coordinator in her day job, is happy to give back to her own Sunnyside neighborhood by coordinating the many volunteers it takes to make things happen.

Whether you have a school/court obligation to pick up community service hours or just know it’s even better to give than to receive, Annette can be your contact for helping out at the Belmont Street Fair (email

).

Volunteering comes with interesting perks and opportunities. Bike trailers will be lined up and ready for the volunteer bike brigade that closes down the Belmont Street Fair this year. You and your bike can be part of a new, green clean up crew.  All volunteers, both on bike and on foot, get a free souvenir street fair t-shirt.

Participating in these fairs is its own kind of community “job” summed up best by a letter Nancy keeps in her office for inspiration all year round.  Lanara Canaday wrote into her neighborhood association after stumbling accidentally onto her community’s parade and street fair back in April . . .

After a lot of traffic-related confusion on Holgate and maybe some uncharitable remarks about the disruption of the status quo, I wandered towards my destination and  . . . didn’t make it.  The 82nd Avenue of Roses parade was just beginning. . .  I suddenly just had to get closer. . .  the great displays and groups just kept coming.

Until this morning, I couldn’t have guessed that these groups existed. . . So this is what my neighbors do in their spare time and this is what they care about.  Suddenly it occurred to me that by watching, I played a part in this spectacle also.

Being surrounded by neighbors and families and unexpectedly feeling like a part of something threw into stark relief the difference between lurking on Facebook and actual interaction with my community.  Seeing smiling faces of all shades and ages gave me some needed perspective on how I might fit in.

All of a sudden I had ambitions to see my particular interest reflected in next year’s event. Maybe next year I will attend on purpose, meet up with new friends, share what I am proud of and add something to my community that wasn’t there before.
