Sara Grey Joe Hickerson PFS concert

Sara Grey is a folksinger and balladeer with a powerful voice and sweet distinctive tremolo well-suited to Native American ballads as well as ballads of Ireland and Scotland. She headlines the October concert for Portland FolkMusic Society, Friday October 18, 7:30, doors at 7 pm.

Equally at home with a touching lyric or a story of hard life on the frontier, Grey ccompanies herself frailing a five string banjo. She is a storyteller specialising in tales from New England where she grew up, and learned many of her stories from her father.

Studying folklore, song-collecting and music from the various areas where she has lived.before she moved to Scotland, she was part of “The Golden Ring” with Ed Trickett and Gordon Bok.

Grey has concentrated the last several years on tracing the migration for songs from the British Isles to North America and has sung at folk clubs in England, Scotland and Wales and 60 different folk and bluegrass festivals.

Opening the October concert is Portland treasure Joe Hickerson, who describes his style as “vintage pre-plugged paleo-acoustic”. After working as librarian and then as head of the Archive of Folk Song for the Library of Congress, there are few people in the world who know as much about folk music as Hickerson does. A folksinger’s folksinger with a wealth of stories and songs and a stage presence that ranges from heart-warming authenticity and playfully sly, Pete Seeger has called him “A great songleader.”
