Ride the Holiday Express train and travel back in time as it goes from Oaks Amusement Park into the city. A plaintiff steam whistle is heard for miles as the Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700 pull out of the Oaks Station, hissing and billowing steam fills the air. While the vintage train run on the Oregon Pacific Railroad along the Willamette River, it doesn’t take long for the hypnotic movement of the clickety-clack to transport riders to places once visited or imagined. At night the lights reflect in the river and from the train to transform the experience into something described by riders as “magical”.
“The Northwest’s First Lady”
The Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad (SP&S) 700 has a noteworthy past. Purchased by the SP&S for passenger train service, the 700 pulled the Empire Builder between Spokane, Washington and Portland, Oregon until the train’s engine was converted to diesel-electric locomotives in 1947. In 1945 the 700 had the honor of pulling a United Nations Delegate Special to San Francisco. The 700 continued in passenger service until 1954. It was donated to the city of Portland in 1958.
