MLK tribute at CST and warm winter movies

Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton St, celebrates the dark of winter with movies to stimulate the senses and warm a chilly evening. January’s calendar includes:

SUMMER IN FEBRUARY, Monday, Jan. 6, 7 pm. Attention: Downton Abbey fans! This film about the Newlyn School of artists at the beginning of the 20th century is for you.  The bohemian Lamorna Group included Alfred Munnigs and Laura and Harold Knight. Munnings, regarded as one of Britain’s most sought-after artists, is at the centre of a complex love triangle. Based on a true story and filmed on the Cornish coast.

KING: A FILMED JOURNEY FROM MONTGOMERY TO MEMPHIS, Monday, Jan. 20, 7 pm. The 10th annual tribute screening of this documentary chronicling the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was originally screened in theaters for only a single night in 1970 and features dramatic readings by Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones, Paul Newman and others. Newsreel and archival footage are included.

LA TRAVIATA, The Clinton Street Theater Highbrow Hangover, Jan. 12 at 1 pm. La Traviata captured in HD at the Opera Festival St. Margarethen. The production, set in a rustic romantic Roman quarry, tells the tragic tale of the demi-mondaine Violetta Valéry and her admirer Alfredo Germont in a replica of the Parisian Opéra Garnier. In the lead roles are Austria’s opera’s Kristiane Kaiser and Jean-François Borras, a young French tenor, the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Ernst Märzendorfer. In Italian with English subtitles.

BLACKOUT, Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 pm. Ex-criminal Jos Vreeswijk, on the day of his marriage, ends up with a gun in his hand next to an unrecognizable corpse. Criminals accuse him of stealing twenty kilos of cocaine and he is given 24 hours to fix everything. Then he has a blackout. Will he still be in time for his own wedding?
