For those who love the idea of an all-day breakfast joint, this place is for you: a family-owned and family-friendly Clinton St. spot that serves eggs the way you like them and desirable lunch offerings including a veggie or grass-fed beef burger, sandwiches and salads, and Eastern European specialties.

ablockOwner and baker Shana Lane Block lives nearby in the Clinton neighborhood, next door to her sister and across the street from her parents.

She oversees the “daily and delicious” that is Block’s stock in trade: perfectly-poached eggs stacked on latkes with house gravlax, matzoh ball soup, egg creams with house ganache, and turkey reubens.

Lane-Block’s complementary bi-coastal influences – East Coast deli and sustainable PDX – are evident in the menu and the wall maps of Portland and NYC displayed with photographs of her Eastern European relatives. This makes for a good mix of traditional family recipes prepared from scratch and local and sustainable sourcing (Gathering Together Farms in Philomath provides the veggies).

When it’s breakfast you’re after, choose from multigrain buttermilk, vegan Sweet Potato Pecan or gluten-free yogurt pancakes, or ask for the sampler platter. The poached egg stack on sauteed greens and polenta are delicate in size but could be rounded out nicely with a salad or a bowl of matzoh ball soup. On the weekends: $5 mimosas!

ablock-outFor a more traditional lunch item, try the house veggie-burger (soy free, GF patty) served with lettuce, tomato and dressing). Avocado added and GF bun available too.

The grass-fed beef burger is served with lettuce, tomato, and dressing and can be further embellished with bacon, blue cheese, cheddar, or fontina.

Sweets and pastries baked daily include chewy chocolate cookies, banana muffins and sour cream coffeecake. The chocolate pudding cup, it seems, has a cult following.

Dinner entrees (think turkey meatloaf and roast chicken), retro sodas, and artisan food products will be available to take out as part of a mini grab-and-go market at the counter. It’s very convenient, especially if you live in the neighborhood or remember when you’re passing through.

Take a look at the garden patio out back. It’s going to be real nice out there before too long.
