Doug Wieselman, Battle Hymns and Gardens and Michael Hurley

An intimate evening of expansive music is planned for Saturday, April 5 at  the Information Warehouse, 411 SE Sixth Ave. beginning at 8:30 pm. The concert features “Downtown” NYC Clarinetist, Doug Wieselman, Battle Hymns and Gardens and folk music Snock Meister Michael Hurley.

Known best as a first-call multi-instrumentalist, Wieselman plays clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone and guitar. He has been arranger for the likes of Lou Reed, Yoko Ono, Martha Wainwright, Cibo Matto, Marianne Faithful, Antony and The Johnsons, Hal Willner, Jenny Scheinman and Bill Frisell, among many others. He’s just released his first solo clarinet record From Water, a truly breathtaking and moving recording and the concert features him on vintage clarinets and live looping,

“This is music primarily made from melodies I have heard from bodies of water – ocean beaches, streams, hot springs as well as wind, Wieselman elucidates. “Each melody is specific to the place. If I return to a beach, even after many years, I hear the same song.  I think this has something to do with what the earth can tell us, if only we can take the time and patience to listen.” dougwieselman.com

Battle Hymns and Gardens features Blue Cranes’ Reed Wallsmith and Joe Cunningham, bassist Jon Shaw and veteran drummer Tim DuRoche. The quartet performs compelling free jazz grounded with conversational interplay and humor. Their originals balance and reflect masters like Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman with lyrical landscapes and sheets of sound. www.battlehymnsandgardens.com

Michael Hurley made his first album in 1964 on the Folkways label and has performed and created for over 50 years. His latest recording Land of Lo Fi was released last year on Portland’s Mississippi Records label. Sliding scale tickets are $8-12, doors open at 7:30 and show at 8:30.
