Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association (HBBA) celebrated Nick’s Coney Island and its current owner’s Casey and Carrie Hogrefe at its 31st Annual Meeting by presenting them with the 2nd Annual Iconic Business Award.  The restaurant, which opened on Hawthorne in 1935 is well-known for great chili hotdogs and its collection of sports photos and its connection with New York’s Coney Island.  Roger Jones, who founded HBBA in 1983 and is a Past President, presented the Hogrefe’’s with the original metal printing plate from a 20 year old article about the second owner, Frank Nudo, which will be added to the wall art.

The 1st Iconic Business Award was presented last year to the McMenamin’s Bagdad Theater.  Attendees received a brief update on the Bagdad’s recent upgrades and the successful change to first run movies.

The Venerable Business Award was presented to Holman Funeral Services owners Daniel Holmes and his son and business partner.  Only the Oregonian is an older Oregon business, having started in 1853, one year before Holman’s. Other Venerable Business Recipients are Jack and Iva Elmer of JaCiva’s Chocolatiers and Michael Emert of Emert & Associates, CPA.  All have been long time supporters of the District.

The newly-established Social Sustainability Award was presented to New Season’s – Hawthorne.  In addition to being a Leeds certified Building and recycling 98% of their waste, New Seasons supports its employees community service interests with up to 8 hours of paid time.  Projects also include regular “Green Team” clean-ups in the District.

Held at the banquet hall at 12th and Madison, Bamboo Grove, formerly affiliated with Madison’s Grill, served a light supper, 3 Doors Down provided the dessert to over 70 Hawthorne area businesses owners, spouses, employees and friends and local businesses donated a wonderful selection of silent auction items.
