Thirty years ago in October, the Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association (HBBA) registered with the State of Oregon as an organization. The first Street Fair staged by business people was before that and small, and started a continuous tradition, only briefly interrupted by circumstances. Those successful first years of celebrating customers, their stores’ products, and the District’s ambiance expanded from one parking lot and a few sidewalk sales to two-day events from 1992 to 1998.

There were Art Car parades, vendors, children’s entertainment, an International Stage at SE 46th, one of four stages handled by the fantastic team of Michael Beach and Michael Kearsey and much more. The theme one year focused on the upper east end: “There is Life Above 39th!!” (These days, even more so!)

1991 was this writer’s first year to be involved with the Boulevard. It has been great fun getting to know Hawthorne, its history and traditions and to continue being involved in putting together Hawthorne’s summer celebrations!  Let us know at think@thinkhawthorne if you’d like to be involved in the event’s planning or a day of project.

The lineup is set and the Brothers of the Baladi will be back at the Main Stage as the closing act for the Sunday August 17 Street Fair right after Hawthorne’s own School of Rock musicians! So, save the date and tell your out of town friends that the Brothers are back!  We hope to be granted full street closure from SE 32nd Street to SE Cesar Chavez Blvd. this year!

Plans for the August 3 Soccer Celebration: “Kick, Kick, Score” are firm now and the website will be up very soon. You’ll also be able to connect through thinkhawthorne.com.

A fond farewell to everybody connected with The Blue Monk. Memories of many evenings of good music will remain.

Thank you to our article sponsors, Hawthorne Vision Center and The SE Examiner and to our 2014 Benefactors: US Bank and New Seasons Market.
