Driving up Hawthorne today was a reminder of its roots as one of the major routes to the river in the mid-1800s. It has been a pleasure to be part of the Boulevard since 1991 and have the opportunity to see east of Cesar Chavez Blvd. grow and change. The bright new coat of paint on JaCiva’s is beautiful. A proper reminder of Jack and Iva Elmer’s part in making Upper Hawthorne a destination for those who would never celebrate without a sweet delight from JaCiva’s Chocolatiers. Jack, you are sorely missed, however, your legacy lives on!

Following their lead, many other destination businesses have moved above that previously formidable dividing line. HBBA’s members to the east include Hawthorne Wellness Center, New Seasons Market, Anisha, Hawthorne Auto Clinic, Float On, The Whole Bowl, Por Que No, Hawthorne Vision Center, Karen Davis, Michael Emert & Associates, CPA, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Mortgage Loans NW, Realty Trust Group, Columbia Coin Co, Locke Insurance Agency ending at Western Seminary. There are now many great Hawthorne Blvd. businesses on the “upper east side” of Cesar Chavez Blvd. Add it to your walking route soon if you haven’t.

Two new businesses have opened recently. Blue Star Donuts at 3549, 503.477.9635 and Hawthorne Lobster House at 2422, 503.231.TAIL. hawthornelobsterhouse.com.

Reminders! Kick Kick Score is on Sunday, August 3 and the Hawthorne Street Fair is Sunday, August 17!

Thank you to our article sponsors, Hawthorne Vision Center, The SE Examiner and to our 2014 Benefactors to date: Safeway on Hawthorne, US Bank and New Seasons Market.
