Oregon Music Hall of Fame Awards

The 8th Oregon Music Hall of Fame (OMHOF) Induction Ceremony and Concert goes live at Aladdin Theater, Saturday October 4 at 7 pm. The event honors Oregonians who’ve significantly influenced the world of music. Artists must either have been born in Oregon working professionally in music for at least 20 years – or have worked in music for 20 years after moving here.

A benefit for music education in the state, there’ll be live performances and entertainer Tony Starlight presides again as Master of Ceremonies.

Live this year will be Nu Shooz (their hit in 1986 was “I Can’t Wait”); Tracy Grammer, of Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer (a solo performer after Carter’s 2002 passing) and Norman Sylvester Blues Band in a tribute to Portland’s Janice Scroggins who passed away last May. An appearance by Dr. Demento, radio personality, musicologist and Reed College alumnus is a special treat this year.

2014 Album of the Year is Janice Scroggins’ Piano Love. Artist of the Year is Portugal, the Man who just released their 6th album. Other inductees include Signe Anderson, Portland native who was a founding member of Jefferson Airplane in 1965; The Dandy Warhols who had 3 top 40 hits in the UK and are the subject of a 2004 documentary; Pink Martini, with several  gold records, and Sand, a 70s feel good group that spawned two members of Quarterflash.

Honored this year too are notable Oregon side players. Rev. Billy Hults, was a washboard player extrordinaire in so many bands including his own Billy Foodstamp and the Welfare Rodeo. Hults organized the first Mayor’s Ball in 1984 that continued for 6 more years and passed away in 2009. Guitarist, composer, arranger and conductor Jay “Bird” Koder will receive an award too. Koder has played in nearly every musical genre over the last 40 years and currently fronts The Soulmates.

Fifteen autographed guitars will be auctioned off and all proceeds go to help music education programs in Oregon. This year’s guitars have been signed by Tori Amos, Beck, The Head and the Heart, Steve Earle, Ray LaMontagne, Merle Haggard, Steve Winwood and ZZ Top.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. $100 VIP tickets include prime seating, a hand-signed and numbered silk-screened Gary Houston poster and admission to the after show VIP catered party. Tickets are available at the Aladdin Theater box office and at www.omhof.org.
