SHAKING THE TREE THEATRE, formerly at 14th and SE Stark St. has signed a five year lease on a large warehouse space at 823 SE Grant St. two blocks west from the Shoebox Theatre. The group’s next show is Edgar Allen Poe’s Masque of the Red Death and opens October 24. Founding Artistic Director Samantha Van Der Merwe says, in addition to its own productions, the group hopes to provide a space for freelance groups to rent for shows, rehearsals and workshops.www.shaking-the-tree.com.

 

HERBIE HANCOCK performs in concert Sunday, September 21 at 7:30 pm in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall downtown. The 14-time Grammy winner and 2013 Kennedy Center Honoree brings his latest quartet featuring Lionel Loueke, guitar; Vinnie Colaiuta, drums and James Genus on bass. TAYLOR HO BYNUM’S ACOUSTIC BICYCLE TOUR is a five week, 1800-mile journey – equal parts performance art, philosophical statement, celebration of musical community, and exercise in extreme physicality. Bynum joins Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble in a concert of his music and new works by Douglas Detrick, Ben Darwish and Thomas Barber, Sunday, September 7, at 7 pm at the Central Hotel in St. John’s, 8608 N Lombard St. Tickets are $10, $5 Students/Seniors available at the door and at pjce.org.

 

MARE WAKEFIELD is an award-winning Texas songwriter who lived here in Oregon and is now based in Nashville. She has a duo with her husband, Nomad, and they are performing in a SE houseconcert Sunday September 7 at 5 pm. Their latest CD, Poet on the Moon, hit the top ten of Folk and Roots radio charts this year. Mare’s (pronounced “Mary”) intimate voice and Nomad’s exquisite piano weaves together story and song. A BENEFIT FOR MOUNTAIN WRITERS features a reading with Allan Peterson and Andrea Hollander, Wednesday, September 17 at 7 pm Glyph Cafe and Arts Space, 804 NW Couch St. Poetry and writing ephemera by Peterson and Hollander will be on display in the cafe’s shadow box tables throughout the month. Suggested: $5, all ages welcome.

 

VAUDEVILLE DELUXE is a film presentation about the art form that flourished on stages throughout North America in the latter part of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Unrelated acts joined in performance ranging from singers, dancers and comedians, animal acts, jugglers and sword swallowers. Film historian and collector Dnnis Nyback presents an evening of vintage Vaudeville films Wednesday September 3 at the Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd. at 7 pm. The program consists of films from 1925 to 1940 and the earliest is a film featuring Gus Visser and his Singing Duck. There are rope skippers, roller skaters, contortionists, Hawaiian musicans, hillbillies, acrobats, Chaz Chase who eats anything, W. C. Fields‘ juggling act, and more in this delightful and astounding program.

 

JD DAWSON’S SENIOR SONGWRITERS SHOWCASE is Fri. Sep. 19 at the Jade Lounge, 2342 SE Ankeny St. from 7-10:30 pm. 6 local songwriters over 50 years old playing all originals in a new round robin format. Friendly folks and a good happy hour menu.
