Jamie Leopold and the Short Stories Live CD

As a four year old, Jaime Leopold moved with his family to what is now in the middle of Portland’s I-405 interchange (what used to be SW 13th and Mill). Since then, his life has been filled with many incredible tales and diversions.

Leopold spent five years playing bass with Dan Hicks and the legendary Hot Licks Band back in the San Fran psychedelic heyday. These days, he and his entertaining band The Short Stories, celebrate the wild deck of card characters he’s met along the way.

The band’s new CD, Live at O’Connors has thirteen tunes from folk tales and bouncy repartee to North Alaska Fire and Rescue, Back When Buddy Holly Could Do No Wrong and From the Land of Muscle Cars.

Leopold calls his music “American Quirk: folk/country/acid memory” and it’s quite a collaboration. At a recent, Laurelthirst gig, the vocal interplay between Leopold and Jennifer Smieja spun these yarns  into present timewhile the rhythm section moved grooves around.

The band features Leopold on guitar, songwriting and vocals, Smieja on vocals, Clark Salisbury on guitar; Aaron Lowe on harmonica, J. Michael Kearsey on bass, and Fred Ingram on drums. This very formidable six piece band went from groove to twang and danced between in odd metres with energy and focus. jaimeleopold.com.
