Peter Rowan Rides Into Town

A bona fide Do Not Miss evening of acoustic music. It’s your chance to spend an up-close intimate evening with legendary bluegrass songwritin’ picker Peter Rowan, Friday May 8 at St. David of Wales Episcopal Church, 2800 SE Harrison St. Doors open at 7, show at 8. Tickets are $30, $25 for OBA members at the door or online at www.oregonbluegrass.org 503.975.6624.

Rowan is a powerhouse of mojo and consciousness wrapped up in the form of a humble guitar-pickin mage singing and spinning layered stories. His most illustrious career has spanned more than five decades.

Rowan began in 1963 as singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the Bluegrass Boys, led by the founding father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe.  “One thing I started to like about the Monroe style was that there was a lot more blues in it than other styles of bluegrass,” says Rowan. “It was darker. It had more of an edge to it.  And yet it still had the ballad tradition in it, and I loved that.”

He’s played in the superlative bands Seatrain, Earth Opera, Muleskinner, Old And In the Way, The Rowan Brothers, Tony Rice, and as Old and In the Way (Rowan, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements and John Kahn). His songs are a part of the Great ZenAmerican Songbook. See peter-rowan.com.

Also on the bill are Frank Solivan And Dirty Kitchen. These guys won the International Bluegrass Music Associations Instrumental group of the year, and received their first Grammy Nomination.. The concert is presented by the Oregon Bluegrass Association.
