Open afternoons and evenings daily. Open 9 am on weekends

Searching for a more authentic lifestyle is a common theme when  interviewing new business owners about what drives them to open their new establishment. This holds true for Travis Preece, owner of Ankeny Tap & Table at 2724 SE Ankeny St.

apubThis native son did all the right things, graduating from OSU, going to grad school in Texas then getting a “good” job in the corporate world but, it wasn’t what he wanted to do all his life. For now, reinventing the restaurant/bar on Ankeny is.

This space has a had a few different types of eat and drink enterprises in it before the Ankeny Tap & Table. Preece changed things up by remodelling and promoting more good food and libation and offering a weekend brunch.

Chef Peter Oetinger has prepared an upscale American menu that includes burgers, steaks, mac ‘n cheese, salads, sandwiches and appetizers.

There are many vegan and gluten-free options and they offer special brussel sprout courses. “We found that people really liked our brussel sprout appetizers so we expanded the options,” Preece said.

“One of my favorite foods is hummus.” The restaurant has taken extra care to make a really good in-house hummus plate. They rotate the flavors, serving it with carrots, cucumber, bell peppers, tomatoes and grilled naan.

The weekend brunch menu offers tantalizing egg dishes, omelettes, silver dollar pancakes and Norwegian pancakes with traditional sides. The jam they use is made in-house and right now they are serving Jalapeño jelly and raspberry jam.

“So far the Huevos Rancheros has been our most popular dish,” Preece says. The secret ingredient is pulled pork from The Cuban sandwich they serve – pulled pork on toasted sourdough with house-made honey mustard sauce, Emmental Swiss and pickles. (If the tantalizing aroma coming from the kitchen during the interview is any indicator of it’s flavor, they’ve got it made.)

This space formerly was the Coalition Brewery’s tasting room. The brewery itself is across the street and Preece maintains the relationships by serving Coalition’s “Fresh Hop” Beers on draft: Promised Land and Wet Fruit (a fresh hop version of their famous “Spacefruit” IPA). Together they are planning on a tap take over. Coalition’s Master Brewers will be on site to offer special tastes, meet fellow beer lovers, and chat about the brews. Most of the beers are from local breweries.

Head Bartender Ryan Titus has nearly 20 years experience and has created a brilliant cocktail menu for guests. Ankeny Tap & Table now offers drinks featuring unique accents, like a blend of Bourbon, Port and Averna, another with tequila, honey and muddled jalapeño, and a third featuring Nicaraguan rum, earl grey tea, agave and an apple ball. They feature seven of these signature drinks in all, but can also make your favorites like the Moscow Mule and a savory Bloody Mary too.

Preece went to grad school in Texas and became a Longhorns fan, he can boast that Ankeny Tap & Table is probably the only place in Portland showing Texas sports.

The upgrade at this location will make this part of Ankeny light up. Now the people of the community have one more great place to come to for dining and drinking.
