CST celebrates MLK and more

On Monday, January 18, Clinton Street Theatre host its 12th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute with a free screening of King: A Filmed Record – From Montgomery To Memphis.

The landmark documentary chronicles the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., from the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement in Montgomery, Alabama, until his assassination in Memphis in 1968. Originally screened in theaters for only a single night in 1970, the film combines readings by Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones, Paul Newman and others along with newsreel and archival footage. It’s a powerful and comprehensive record of Dr. King’s legacy and the American Civil Rights movement.

CST is also one of the venues for the Fertile Ground Festival and hosts two theatrical performances.

• In Toxic is the story of hope and radical action in the face of addiction and depression. Two sisters come of age in a small religious community with daily coal trains barreling through town. As the whole community decides what to do to stand up to the environmental destruction caused by the coal, the sisters redefine their relationship in the context of drug abuse and recovery. (Friday, Jan 22, 7:30 pm / Saturday, Jan 23 at 2 and 7:30 pm, and Sunday, Jan 24 at 2 pm)

• The New Vaudeville is the latest incarnation from The Affable Gentlemen who present a sidesplitting, heartwarming night of music, stories and good ol’ fashioned fun. Each show features five storytellers and performances from the Northwest’s most talented, distinguished and bizarre. Produced by Elaborate Alibi, a young company committed to boundary pushing content with classic vaudevillian flavor. (Saturday, Jan 30 / Sunday, Jan 31, 8 pm).
