More cell-towers planned on school properties

Op-ed from a concerned parent

“Parents deserve to know wireless radiation can cause a wide range of symptoms including headaches, nausea and racing heart rates,” says Frank Clegg, former President of Microsoft Canada.
In 2011 the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) categorized microwave radiation from all wireless sources, including Wi-Fi in schools, as a Class 2B carcinogen in the same category as lead, chloroform, DDT and automobile exhaust.
Presently there are cell-towers at seven of Portland’s schools: Green Thumb in SE; Beaumont, Grant, Meek, Rigler and Roosevelt in NE and Stephenson in SW.
After those towers were installed, PPS adopted a no (more) cell-tower policy. Those leases are due to expire this year and PPS intends to renew the leases and rent even more school property for cell-towers at additional schools.
If so, PPS will abandon its no cell-tower policy, which may put hundreds, perhaps thousands of children at further and continued risk.

Microwave exposure levels measured at four of the schools were extremely high, especially in upstairs classrooms located a few feet from antennas.
What are the risks of cell towers in schools? The experts speak.
Dr. Anthony Miller, World Health Organization expert warns: “Waiting for the government to update their decades-old regulations will be too late for the children currently being exposed to RF radiation in your district’s classrooms.
Wi-Fi networks in schools and cell- towers on your school grounds could significantly increase the cancer risk in your community.”
Radiation expert Jerry Flynn, a retired Canadian Armed Forces captain with 22 years of military experience in electronic warfare, confirms that these ultra-high frequencies are exceptionally dangerous for humans: “because they penetrate more deeply all organ systems of the body and therefore put all human organs at risk.”
In 2011 a Brazilian study found that 7,191 cases of cancer were attributed to radiation from cell-tower antennas:

According to the study, more than 81 percent of people who die in Belo Horizonte by specific types of cancer live less than 500 meters away from the 300 identified cellphone antennas in the city.
As far back as October 4, 1971, the U.S. Naval Medical Research Institute published a research report, Bibliography of Reported Biological Effects Attributed to Microwave and Radio Frequency Radiation, a compilation of over 2000 references that lists well over 100 dangerous biological effects.

Other studies with similar results came from The Defense Intelligence Agency in 1976, NASA in 1981 and The U.S. Air Force in 1994.
In 2009, L.A. Unified School District passed a resolution calling for setbacks for towers near schools.
Last year Los Angeles abandoned plans to install cellular antennas on 34 fire stations due to fierce opposition by the fire chief (who literally begged the city council), firefighters and the L.A.P.D.
In 2004, the International Association of Fire Fighters authored a position statement with regard to locating cell-towers on or near fire stations. This was issued only after thorough research of the science:
The first paragraph of the lengthy sourced and footnoted document reads:
“The International Association of Fire Fighters’ position on locating cell- towers commercial wireless infrastructure on fire department facilities, as adopted by its membership in August 2004 (1), is that the IAFF oppose the use of fire stations as base stations for towers and/or antennas for the conduction of cellphone transmissions until a study with the highest scientific merit and integrity on health effects of exposure to low-intensity RF/MW radiation is conducted and it is proven that such sitings are not hazardous to the health of our members.”
It is astonishing that there is no local, state or federal agency that monitors emissions from cell- towers. Telecom companies are responsible for monitoring emission from their own towers.

If you are opposed to cellular antennas in public schools, PPS can be reached with your comments at: schoolboard@pps.net and the superintendent at: superintendent@pps.net. Contact State and Federal Senators and Representatives as well.
