HAND August 16

By Jill Riebesehl

The Hosford-Neighborhood District Association (HAND), in our mission to advance livability and safety, welcomes all local residents’  input and participation.

Our neighborhood is at the epicenter of many of the changes caused by Portland’s rapid growth. Since the MAX Orange Line excitement and the opening of Tillicum Bridge last year, HAND is turning our attention to several proposals: a rapid bus line between downtown and Mt. Hood Community College;  weighing in on the state Dept. of Transportation’s plans to remove several trees on Powell; thinking long and hard on how to deal with congestion on SE 11th and 12th Avenues where they meets the tracks; and addressing the need for traffic-calming along those two avenues.

We are enthusiastic about the long, careful collaborative effort by many participants to develop design guidelines for further developments along Division Street.

We always need and welcome assistance and new insights as we work to keep up with changes in the evolving Central City 2035 Plan and to respond in timely fashion, especially when we believe developments may not be in the best interest of HAND residents.

Updates regarding the Relocation of Right 2 Dream Too and air quality reports on Bullseye Glass and other suspected pollution sources land frequently on our agenda.

This summer we are sponsoring fun family community festivities. At the Division-Clinton Street Fair on July 23, our booth shared a great location to greet passersby and watch the parade.

August 2, everyone is invited to enjoy free ice cream at the “National Night Out” HAND Ice Cream Social in Piccolo Park, where there will be water fun for children and perhaps a visit from a fire engine or the city’s mounted police. The party begins at 6 pm.

HAND, along with Richmond Neighborhood Association and Sunnyside Neighborhood are sponsoring this year’s Movies In The Park, August 20 at Sewallcrest Park. Activities start at 6:30 pm with music, free popcorn and vendors. The movie, “Best in Show”, begins at dusk.

We invite neighbors to join us at our Executive Committee meeting at 7 pm at Palio’s August 23 (please RSVP). The next full board meeting will be on September 20, at 7 pm at St. Philip Neri in Carvlin Hall.  A Land-Use Committee meeting precedes the board meeting at 6:30 pm.
