AHCs Old Portland Art Show

Aaron Trotter commemorates the Italianate style of Portland’s last remaining cast-iron buildings with 52 pen and ink drawings highlighting a fading view of the Rose City in  Old Portland. An Art Show at the Architectural Heritage Center, 701 SE Grand Ave. opening Friday October 7, from 6 to 8 pm and up through November 30.

The drawings stand as a call to action against the rapid loss of the historical character of commercial districts and neighborhoods.

Trotter says: “My ‘survey’ covers 1857 – 1916 and my intention is to celebrate and educate about the Grand Era of Portland’s bygone, Victorian, boom town times, contrasting with our New Portland boom town.”

The AHC’s mission is to ‘inspire people to conserve the art, craft, and context of historic buildings and places,’ and Trotter wants his work to remind Portland residents to take an interest in preservation and appreciate the few very fine buildings that remain intact.

“A few of the most perfect structures are protected and seem to be set forever as historical landmarks, but I want to do what I can to protest the demolitions.”
