McCoy Tyner at Revolution Hall

Pianist McCoy Tyner has appered on so many legendary albums as bandleader, sideman (early on as a member of John Coltrane’s illustrious Quartet playing on A Love Supreme, My Favorite Things and others). At 78 years young, Tyner is in fine form though he hasn’t played a Portland show for nearly 10 years. On Tuesday October 18 you can see him in  concert at Revolution Hall with a quartet that includes saxophonist Gary Bartz.

The distinguished jazz pianist McCoy Tyner appears in a rare Portland concert presented by PDX Jazz Tuesday October 18 at Revolution Hall, 1300 SE Stark St. The music begins at 7:30 pm.

Tyner’s outstanding musical contributions are respected and known the world over and his place in the pantheon of musical innovation is well-assured. As the pianist in John Coltrane’s legendary Quartet, touring nonstop between 1961 and 1965 many revered albums were created including A Love Supreme, My Favorite Things, Live! at the Village Vanguard, and so many others. By 1966, he led his own band and has recorded nearly 80 other albums as a bandleader.

Tyner’s blues-based piano style and percussive left hand has transcended conventional styles to become an instantly identifiable sound in improvised music. He has collaborated with Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Hank Mobley, Stanley Turrentine, Gary Bartz and countless others,

The recipient of five Grammy Awards, Tyner at 78 is still touring, and this will be his first Portland concert in a decade. His quartet features Gary Bartz on saxophone, Gerald Cannon on bass and Joe Farnsworth drums. Read more at mccoytyner.com
