Forever Dusty

It’s nearly time for the West Coast premiere of Forever Dusty, the story of how Dusty Springfield, a shy Irish Catholic school girl from West London transformed herself into the voice of blue-eyed soul and the face of Swinging London.

She was born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien, Springfield became the only female pop star/songwriter of the 1960s to have 21 hits in 21 years.

Her image of a peroxide blonde with a bouffant hairstyle, dressed in evening gowns and heavy makeup, and her flamboyant performances made her an icon of the “Swinging Sixties”.

Springfield was the first female entertainer in England to host a TV show featuring Motown entertainers The Temptations, The Supremes, The Miracles, and Stevie Wonder. In 1964, Springfield’s tour of South Africa was controversially terminated and she was deported, after she performed for an integrated audience at a theatre near Cape Town against the government’s segregation policy. Her contracts specifically excluded segregated performances, making her one of the first British artists to do so. The Beatles had this stipulated in their touring rider back then as well.
