January at Clinton Street

The venerable Clinton Street Theatre, 2522 SE Clinton St. opens the year with the new indie movie, Hunter Gatherer January 6-8.  After a three-year prison stretch, an unreasonably optimistic middle-aged man returns to his neighborhood to win back his girlfriend only to find that she and his family have done what they wanted to do – forget he exists. Pay-what-you-like.

• January 10 – A one-time showing of the award-winning documentary Inside Peace screens. Three criminal offenders marked by generations of violence, addiction and bad choices, attend a ‘Peace Class’ in a Texas jail and try to rediscover their humanity and rebuild their lives from the inside out. $7-10 suggested donation; no one turned away for lack of funds.

• January 14 – The Clinton Street Stomp returns with King Columbia, Mamma Coal, Terry Robb, and Matty Charles and Katie Rose. Dumpster Joe and his Jaz Villains and this month the Stomp is hosted by Nick Mccan. Doors at 6:30 pm, the show starts at 7 pm sharp. $10 in advance, $12 at the door.

• January 16 – King: A Filmed Record…from Montgomery to Memphis is the landmark documentary chronicling the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Originally screened in theaters for only a single night in 1970, Readings by Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones and Paul Newman, with newsreel and archival footage. Free.
