Portland composers and classical musicians unite on President’s Day, February 20, for a common cause: a concert entitled Music of Hope and Empowerment. It’s a benefit concert to fight hate and promote social justice and all proceeds will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Dr. William Barber’s organization Repairers of the Breach and Causa Oregon.
The concert is at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 3880 SE Brooklyn St., beginning at 7:30 pm and features music new and old. Portland composers Thomas DeNicola (piano) and Patrick McCulley (saxophone) will perform their own compositions along with Stacey Phillip’s woodwind trio, Prevailing Winds.
Other selections include a classical Japanese work by Shingo Ikegami arranged for clarinet and koto; Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet K. 581; Dvorák’s Piano Trio in F minor Op. 65; Poulenc’s song cycle, Banalités. and Beethoven, Brahms, and Astor Piazzolla round out the program. Musicians are from Classical Revolution PDX, the Portland Music Collective, String Theory, Trio Musicorum Medicorum, and mezzo-soprano Sadie Gregg.
Admission is $10 or more. Recent donation receipts from any of the following benefiting organizations will be accepted for admission: Southern Poverty Law Center (splcenter.org); Repairers of the Breach (breachrepairers.org/donate); or Causa Oregon (causaoregon.org/donate).
