Spring is in the air and HBBA is planning its Annual Meeting March 16. Catered by Spin and happening at the Tony Starlight Room on Madison and 12th, we are looking forward to this great opportunity for our businesses, property owners and friends to get together, share a meal, elect the Board and officers, hear Christian Kaylor update us on the local economic indicators and acknowledge our history and successes with awards. For reservations, call 503.775.7633.

Peter Rossing, Muse Art & Design, 4220, has announced his Store Closing Sale after 12 years on Hawthorne. The sale will run as long as needed. Stop by, pick up those art supplies you’ve been wanting and wish Peter success in his next venture.

This writer has now been part of HBBA and its activities for 25 years.  Looking back through The Gazette from 1992 and 1993, I’d like to acknowledge the 50+ primarily locally-owned businesses that were there then and are still here – actively supporting and helping keep Hawthorne strong and healthy.

In 1991, the first walking patrol was started with 100 businesses pledging whatever they could to keep the district and its businesses safe and secure. That goal was achieved and maintained until recently when the District became a gathering place of people who had other needs and goals sometimes not positive for customers to feel safe and welcomed. A new Patrol program will start soon and to maximize its effect, we still need businesses and property owners to sign up and support.
