NTNA board members were surprised to learn at the monthly board meeting on March 21 that 1000 dollars is being held in reserve for North Tabor by SE Uplift pending renewal of the SEUL sponsorship agreement, which expired over a year ago. This money would be available for general purpose projects, according to Katy Asher, the SEUL neighborhood liaison.

These might include the annual neighborhood clean-up, a block party, a mural project, or any creative, well-planned project that would improve the neighborhood. Any North Tabor residents interested in serving as a project coordinator for a particular project should contact board@northtabor.org

NTNA board decided to postpone for a month a vote on a resolution supporting renters’ rights in North Tabor, where approximately half the residents are tenants. The resolution specifically calls on the board to support three initiatives: a) Portland Ordinance 188219 (presently being challenged in court) which mandates relocation assistance for tenants displaced by no-cause evictions; b) Oregon HB 2001, which would remove a statewide prohibition on local ordinances regulating rents; and c) passage by the Portland City Council of the Tenants’ Bill of Rights proposed by Mayor Ted Wheeler.

Several board members and residents in attendance felt that more time was needed to flesh out the details of these measures, and to reach out to neighborhood members. A vote will be scheduled for the next board meeting on Tuesday, April 18.

Infill Update:

Portland Development Bureau’s Adjustment Review Committee has rejected an appeal from NTNA to downscale the design for the proposed eight-unit condo project at NE 53rd and Couch St. Nonetheless, some board members and at least one neighbor expressed the opinion that an acceptable compromise came out of the process in that the developer agreed to keep the height of the buildings below 40 feet though the code allows for up to 55 feet. The target price for the condos is 500-600 thousand dollars.

A demolition permit has been issued for the property at 20 NE 60th St. It will be replaced by several 1 to 3 bedroom market-rate apartments with limited parking.

A groundbreaking date of July 1 is tentatively set for a 28-unit condo development at the corner of E. Burnside and NE 52nd St. Units will range from 625 to 1100 feet and will be priced at 289 to 389 thousand dollars.
