AUSTRALIAN POP QUEEN MALLRAT is in concert Tuesday February 5 at the Hawthorne Theatre, 1507 SE 39th Ave. sharing the bill with Gnash. Mallrat (aka Grace Shaw) hails from Brisbane and her latest batch of tunes, In the Sky, finds beauty in the mundane with all the weirdness and wonder that comes with a teenage perspective. ODDVILLE: A NEW VAUDEVILLIAN TRADITION – presented Sunday February 10 is a monthly vaudevillian comedy show. This month’s performers include: Ryan Howe and Tim Giuni (clown and puppetry); Kris Woolen; and Lacy Knickers (burlesque), hosted by Professor Schreiber, the Historical Conjurer. PARATHEATRE: RITUAL WITHOUT DOGMA – An evening talk with Antero Alli, author/director, at PerformanceWorks Northwest, 4625 SE 67th Ave. (near Foster), Tuesday, February 19 at 7 pm. Alli, author of Towards an Archeology of the Soul, and artistic director of ParaTheatrical ReSearch PDX, will discuss the principles and methods of a ritual technology he’s developed, inspired by Jerzy Grotowski’s Paratheatre. The work combines physical theatre, dance, vocalization and standing meditation to access vital currents in the body towards spontaneous expression as presence, gesture, action, and interaction. $5-10 sliding scale. OREGON CHILDREN THEATRE’S YOUNG PROFESSIONALS presents the Impulse Improv Comedy Troupe, February 8-24. Impulse takes the stage again with fast-paced comedic scenes based on audience suggestions. PORTLAND JAZZ COMPOSERS ENSEMBLE (PJCE) presents From Maxville to Vanport, a multimedia project, Sunday, March 3 at Portland’s Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan St. A ten minute documentary by Sika Stanton screens at 7 pm. Music starts at 8 pm drawing from jazz, R&B, and blues, with stories of Black workers and their families in rural eastern Oregon and the area north of Portland. With music, composed by Ezra Weiss with lyrics by poet S. Renee Mitchell, performed by PJCE, and vocalist Marilyn Keller. Two films by Kalimah Abioto are part of the concert. MOSAIC STRING ACADEMY (previously Kate’s Music Studio est. 2008) has opened at 5120 SE 28th Ave., three blocks south of Holgate and the David Kerr Violin shop. Mosaic is accepting new students for private, weekly lessons and group classes and is conveniently located between Sellwood, Reed and Creston Neighborhoods.
