New ESS Gallery Opens on SE Division Street
July 11 - July 31
July 26 will be the opening celebration of ESS Gallery at 2516 SE Division Street in Portland. The event is open to the public. The large gallery space on the ground floor of The Geode building welcomes visitors to view the works of sculptors Martin Eichinger, Chas Martin, Blaise McGettigan and abstract painter Barry Mack.
National Sculpture Society Fellow, Martin Eichinger shows his bronze figures in galleries throughout the country. Although his studio has been in Portland since 1984, his work is rarely displayed locally. “I’ve always intended to create a hub for creative people to connect and share ideas. My goal is that ESS Gallery will become a space for artists and collectors to exchange ideas and share insights.
Eichinger’s bronze sculptures are featured in the gallery. In addition, two of his studio assistants share the spotlight. Sculptor Chas Martin has worked with Eichinger for two years. His sculptures are considerably different in subject and style. His colorful archetypal characters are inspired by petroglyphs. Often described as “whimsical,” they speak to universal primal qualities.
Blaise McGettigan joined Eichinger’s studio recently. His sculptures are inspired by the animal kingdom. A galumphing giraffe balanced on one leg is a graceful performance of curves from every vantage point. Seeing this anatomically perfect form frozen in time is not a common site. It is both amusing and amazing at once.
Painter Barry Mack, a Portland resident currently exploring life and art in New York City. His large paintings of heavily built up materials are complex and hypnotic. In layers of poured and painted surfaces, he transforms a flat canvas into studies of time and space.
The four artists have little in common stylistically. But, in a way that becomes clear when observed together, each artist manages his subject dynamically. Through imaginative compositions, they engage viewers in their exploration of form and space.
ESS Gallery is open Wednesday and Friday from noon to 5pm, Thursday noon to 7pm and by appointment. ESS Gallery is owned by Eichinger Sculpture Studio, Portland, OR.
