Twelve Days of Christmas in Wales
December 14 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
The Welsh Society of Oregon (WSOR) celebrates Christmas in song and story, bringing together Welsh vocal and instrumental music along with readings and dramatic enactments. The concert program highlights the distinctive traditions of Wales throughout the holiday season from the melodious decking of the hall and rustic, plygain carols by candlelight, to the wintry Mari Lwyd wassailers and final festivities of Twelfth Night. The program will also include sing-alongs and even a chance to learn to sing a little in the “language of heaven”—Welsh!
The musical program features the WSOR’s Welsh Dragon Choir (directed by Dr. Jamie Webster) singing carols and other seasonal music old and new in Welsh and English. Joining them will be special guests Andrea Wild and the Bad Wolves, Portland’s only Welsh folk music band, an ensemble of pipes, fiddle, and other traditional instruments, and led by folk vocalist Andrea Wild. The dramatic program features readings of Dylan Thomas by our own Idris Evans, a native of mid-Wales, as well as enactments by the Little Dragons, our children’s improvisational troupe.
