Welcome to the HBBA 2013-14 Board of Directors!  President: Hilda Stevens- Bazi Bierbrasserie; Vice-President: Cassie Ridgeway – Mag Big; Secretary: Miranda Levin – Memento and Treasurer: Michelle Bonnette – Key Bank.  Returning are Roger C. In addition to a display of past years’ Street Fair and other event posters, a Boulevard Slide Show was prepared by Bruce Chaser and Roger Jones. The 30th Anniversary Speaker, Nancy Hales, spoke about the importance of local shopping and sustainability issues.

Michele Machado updated us on the State of Sustainability on the Boulevard and announced a new Community Service Award for 2014. Contestants will be self-nominated based on their own assessment of how well their business met the criteria which will be publicized later this year.

After dessert (cake by JaCivas, cookies by Madison’s) and the Champagne Toast, Hilda Stevens and Cassie Ridgeway presented this year’s awards:  Hawthorne District Improvement Awards – new construction on the Boulevard contributing to the health of the District- went to New Seasons Market and Safeway.

The third annual Venerable Business Award was awarded to Fred Meyer, which has been on the Boulevard since 1933 when they opened in the current Bread & Ink location on SE 36th. The first annual award went to JaCiva’s Chocolatiers and the second to Michael Emert, a Boulevard CPA who has been a property owner and business on Hawthorne on SE 35th and now on SE 48th Ave. Michael completed HBBA’s tax returns for many years.

A first time award was made to an Iconic Business – Bagdad Theater & Pub. Besides being in the HBBA logo, the Bagdad Theater or portions of it have been pictured in five of HBBA’s Street Fair posters.

New Businesses were welcomed to the Blvd. and the evening concluded with drawings for six baskets of Boulevard business certificates and items and the flower table decorations donated by Fred Meyer, Safeway and New Seasons. Thank you to everybody who made the evening a success!
