Heavy equipment enthusiasts may have been delighted with the massive 20-plus ton excavator digging up the old Portland Impact Building at 4703 SE Hawthorne recently but neighbors were less than enthused about the dust it stirred. “Who knows what we’re breathing,” said a passerby.
The 690E LC front loader was temporarily stopped when it was discovered the demolition permit had not been picked up. Once it was – and the dust settled – work proceeded. With its roughly 40 foot-long reach, the machine was ideal to dig a deep enough trench to accommodate parking for the four-story, 50-unit apartment building with retail on the ground floor to be built at the site.
With the new build arising on Cesar Chavez between Belmont and Stark, 140 new units will soon be available in the Hawthorne District. MP
